Diving Further into Language + Literacy

A large interest in the month of March has been exploring language and literacy! This has been shown through the children’s massive interest in books, felt stories, and songs. Each morning, the children are eager to gather on the carpet to read a variety of stories with the educators. Since we are actively reading stories in the program each and every day, the children have also started to memorize the books! For instance, when reading the book ‘Where’s the Pumpkin?’, R is able to speak about what is happening in the story as soon as the page is turned. For example, he will say, “Apple! Oh no!” as the story character mistakes an apple for a pumpkin. By reading stories, the children are also able to expand their vocabulary. The children have been able to expand their knowledge of colours by learning to say/label colours such as purple, pink, and blue. This has then helped the children communicate while engaging in art experiences. Additionally, the children have been able to label items in books and then find them in the classroom. M will often point at a clock in a book, say “Clock!” and then point at the clock on the wall. The children are also learning about sequences while engaging in stories. While we do our felt stories, the children have the opportunity to interact with the story by placing the animals/people/bugs on the felt board to help tell the story alongside the educators! By doing this, the children are also gaining a sense of belonging, as well as a sense of responsibility by actively participating in telling the story!
