How high is yours?
As the children arrived a small group gathered at the block table and began stacking the blocks, creating tall tower-like structures.
“Look mine is big!”- S
“My is bigger, see”-We
“Ya thats a big one”-Wa
“Mine big”- L.
As they collected the blocks and added them to their structures, they continued to
compare the different heights as they switched back and forth from putting them on
the table and then holding them up in the air. Meanwhile at the other table the
interest of creating enclosures continued for the cars and people to go in. During our
team meeting we discussed some ideas of how to further expand on these interests
and build on the different skills and terminology they use as they describe their
structures; “Big, bigger, taller, high, wobbly, not straight, home, garage”.
The idea of bringing in bigger and different blocks was discussed along with more
open ended materials. Throughout the month of September the children have been
exploring building in a variety of different ways and with a variety of different
materials. We will continue to observe and support these interests as the children
expand on them.
