Our children
have been packing up their personal bags at different points of the day and
indicating “we are going to the store…bye!” At first they would just line up
at the door and talk about the store. We then evolved to walking out the doors
and the children guided us to what direction we needed to go. This quickly
turned into going on multiple “store hunts” while walking around our community
in search of a store. With no such luck finding s store, we
started to ask the children “what do we do at the store?” “what can we get at
the store?” The children did not share any responses. We decided to do a
homework question with our families to gain some insight to what stores our
children have been exposed to with the intent to print out the street view of
the actual store to see if this helped the children deepen their thought
concept of a “store”. The pictures were placed in our room and EUREKA the
children’s eyes widened from the familiarity and they shared “I go to that
store!” “I get apples at the store” “I get blueberries at that store” and “that
my store!” With the feedback from the children streaming in we created a new
space in our room that has been transformed into their very own store. We
posted a request to all programs at Elsie for any empty kitchen jars,
containers and boxes to help add a real life element to our store. Our store
has been open for a week and our shelves are stocked up and the children have
been filling up our reusable bags “I go shopping”.
