A proven approach

The Schoolhouse Playcare Centre is committed to inclusive child care. Within our programs, observations of the children are completed daily. These observations are instrumental to the Reggio Emilia approach. From these observations Educators are able to deconstruct and help frame children's thoughts, ideas and actions into the curriculum.

All children registered in the Infant, Toddler, and Preschool programs will have a portfolio which will document their thinking, personality and developmental journey. Portfolios are made available for parents to look through on a regular basis.

community connections

Over the past week (September 2024), we have been working to connect with other schools in the community to build some outdoor structures for our Infant, Toddler, and Preschool Programs. Making connections within the community is considered to be an essential part of our Reggio Emilia Philosophy and is considered in the educational learning process.

The materials that we are looking to make are footbridges to challenge our infant gross motor abilities outside, as well as benches, and small tables for all programs to allow children to come together in a variety of ways, supporting relationships, and fostering opportunities for different explorations of materials.

So far, we have built Connections with St. Ignatius Highschool, Dennis Franklin Cromarty, and are working towards a plan with Hammarskjold High School! We look forward to what will come of this project. Stay tuned!

Days & Hours of operation

The centre provides full time, part time, before and after school care and professional activity day services. Presently, the centre operates from September to June. A survey is sent out to indicate if there is enough need to remain open during March break and the summer months.

Full time care is offered: 7:30 am - 5:30 pm

Part time care is offered as follows:

• Two to five days a week
• Mornings with lunch (anytime from 7:30 am - 1:00 pm)
• Morning only (8:30 am - 11:30 am)
• Before school care (7:30 am - 9:00 am)
• After school care (2:40 pm - 5:30 pm)
• Professional Activity Days for children 6 - 12 years of age (7:30 am - 5:30 pm)

Programs

• InfantFor infants 0-18 months of age, the Infant Program puts parents, infants and educators through a process of "Inserimento" - an Italian translation of "new beginning" and "transition".
• ToddlerFor children 18 - 30 months of age, the Toddler Program is based on our belief that children learn through play in a home-like atmosphere.
• Nursery SchoolFor children 2.5 - 5 years of age, the Nursery School program is an opportunity for children to be introduced to a group setting that follows the Reggio Emilia Principles.
• PreschoolFor children 2.5 - 3.5 years of age, our Preschool Program is based on topics of interest which are relevant to the child's world and incorporated into the curriculum.
• KindergartenFor children 4 - 6 years of age, our Kindergarten Program is based on projects which are relevant to the child's world and are incorporated into the curriculum.
• School AgeFor children 6 -12 years of age, our School Age Program allows for an informal, secure, relaxing learning environment in which a child can make activity choices within a recreational atmosphere.

• Fun in the Sun Summer Camps“Fun in the Sun” Summer Camps are being developed for the kindergarten/school aged children enrolled with SPC over the summer to enrich and enhance the children’s experience over the summer.
