Years ago Schoolhouse Playcare Centre joined St. James school in creating and maintaining a vegetable garden on the school grounds. Each spring we share the garden boxes and plant various types of vegetables. Over the following months the children visit the gardens, water and watch the vegetables grow. Once fall arrives we harvest what is in the garden and bring items inside to explore further.
To celebrate this collaborative experience the preschool program and St James school kindergarten classes plan a harvest lunch together. Vegetables from the garden and the children's homes are used to create a soup which is served at a gathering of all these children. The story of 'Stone Soup' is also a story revisited many times prior to the lunch and the day of the lunch!
