The Reggio Inspired philosophy Schoolhouse follows views the children as inventive, curious and full of ideas. We fill our classroom with loose parts, open ended materials and recyclables. Our environments include nature based recourses and less plastic preconceived toys. Our goal is to ensure that we provide a home like environment.
With an interest in construction and building the children find cardboard boxes popsicle sticks, egg cartons, tape and hot glue and begin to use their creativity to construct automobiles. To top it off they find plastic containers and call them “gas tanks” and then use a watering can filled with water and food colouring to funnel the gas in their tanks “so they can run” They inform me. “Vroom vroom” can be heard in the room as the children push them around the floor! What Imaginations the children have, I think to myself!
Next they construct “cardboard garages” this process takes time, about a week to complete. The materials used are popsicle sticks, hot glue, cardboard box lids and of course some hot wheels cars. The children take pride in their work and use their garages and automobiles in both our indoor and outdoor classrooms.
I wonder what they will create next...
