"The Movie Theatre" (the week of February 28-March 7th)
To extend on an activity that happened the day before; a group of children were engaged with setting up a ticket stand at their movie theater. They had all the chairs in our room, gathered to the far back corner with the blinds and lights shut off having set up a puppet show/movie.
R.M. and A.D. were handing out tickets to the children and were showing them to their seats. E.B. and T.B. were preparing 'food' in the kitchen area; putting the Loose Parts wooden blocks "popcorn" in brown bags and handing them out to friends. They continued this play throughout the whole day; having E.P. put on a story by reading books for the people sitting in the chairs. As this was happening, they were listening to ocean sounds music in the background to help the children connect to the ocean book that was read to them.
Some of the Grade One children, including E.P., W.B. and E.C. put on a magic show for B.C.Y. and R.C.Y. In their show they talked about pirates and maps. W.B. and K.D. had an idea, and with T.B. and L.M. they drew out a map with X, marking the treasure and dead ends where you have to circle back and turn around on the map. It showed different directions around the school and outside the school. We took their map on a walk around the school to look for treasure. Unfortunately we did not find anything in the school. Afterwards, we went outside to continue the search. To help find the treasure, bottles of paint were brought outside and used to 'track our trail'.
