Welcome back from holidays everyone! At the beginning of the month, two boys were observed at the wood working bench hammering pieces of wood together. When asked what they were doing, they replied "we are making a catapult". After further conversation, the boys talked about how they remembered making a catapult at the Grey Street location when they were in kindergarten. We found past documentation on the catapult and brought it in for the boys to look through. They then planned how they were going to re-build the catapult. A lot of research has been done over the last few weeks as to how a catapult is built and what they were used for. Designs have been drawn out, and tested using popsicle sticks and small wooden blocks. We are in the process of collecting larger pieces of wood to re-create a larger scale catapult with the children.
This month we have also started exploring different art materials after the children asked to do "mini art workshops". We started out using clay and beads with wire. The children poked and pinched the clay and came up with many different kinds of sculptures. This led to the next workshop "wire sculptures" after observing how the children used the clay and wire. The children placed beads on the clay instead directly putting the beads on the wire and attaching them to the clay. This led to a discussion of how make sculptures with wire and beads! Stay tuned to see what the children will create next!
