The children have been engaged in building collaboratively a large box castle. The interest began as another child in the program created a large "dragon" using an empty box and open-ended materials. The children took turns adding their ideas to the design of the castle before constructing it.. It was interesting to watch all of the children in the program add to the castle in different ways. Some children designed the castle, others constructed it, some wanted to paint and others enjoyed using it for dramatic play. A child in the younger group posed the question "how do we measure the castle", and now the school aged children are sketching and measuring the box using different measuring tools.
