Learning and Developing Empathy during Infancy
Children are not born with the ability to empathize with others, it is a skill that is modeled to them by the people in their lives. Infants see the people in their lives caring for others, and meeting their needs and develop that skill over time. This summer, we were noticing many of our infants begin to develop the ability to feel others emotions and take steps to make them feel better. Here is an example of how infants display empathy throughout their day
Jacob notices that Ethan is feeling sad and goes to the other side of the room to bring him his special blanket.
