“Cinnamon Bun Paint!”
January 2019 – Grey St Toddler Program
At almost all times, there is a group of children cooking in the kitchen area in our toddler program. We have added many things to extend their learning, including a variety of real spice jars. The children were noticing the different scents that they have, and using them to prepare their meals with.
To take this further, we brought some of the spices to the table with the children, first smelling each of them, noticing what they look like, and feeling their textures. We chose spices including cinnamon, paprika, turmeric, and parsley, which all have vibrant colours and strong scents.
The children then added some glue, turning the spices into a paint-like mixture. Some tested them out with their fingers on paper, while others used their paint brushes, making strokes straight across, and in a circular motion. This experience lasted almost an hour, and gave us some beautiful art to hang up!
“more glue” - E said as she squeezed lots of glue into her bowl of parsley.
“yellow!” – L noticed as he shook the turmeric onto his tray.
“I want the cinnamon bun paint!” - E said as she reached for the brown, cinnamon mixture.
