Toddler Program

december 2022

Today we introduced an expansion to the children’s current interest in the transformation of things. We have explored glue as a whole and now we moved onto a thicker density medium, corn syrup. We set up tinfoil wrapped canvases with coloured corn syrup in containers with glue spreaders and sat back and observed.

The children were observed scooping the corn syrup with the spreaders and watching as the corn syrup drizzled onto the tinfoil. They went back and forth between using the spreaders to drizzle and then using the flat spatula to spread the sticky medium around on their canvas. Some of the children discovered that tipping their container would transfer the syrup faster onto the canvas and would then move it using the spreader.

As they explored these were some of the children’s comments:

A - “Colour… red one” “I mix it up…mix…mix…mix” “sticky”

K - “look what i made” “I’m making house too!”

E - “What's happening?” “It’s a circle, it’s a house”

C - “wee!” “da-da-da-da!”
C - “oooo”
