Our School Age Program is up and running! For the month of September we have been getting to know each other and working on setting up our program. It has been quiet the whirl-wind!
Below is and example of how the chilren have been establishing new relationships using building materials as a common interest.
Connecting Through K’Nex
Construction materials such as blocks, Lego, and loose parts often brings children together and offers opportunities for children to collaborate together, creating interesting structures incorporating everyone’s ideas. These materials naturally lead to building wonderful strong relationships amongst the group.
Noah & Olivia begin to build with the K’Nex following different diagrams in a book.
Zack & Cash join and begin creating their own “Wheelers”
The group begin to develop a game rolling the “Wheelers” trying to knock off their opponents “wheeler”.Stacking cups are used as point markers.
The game becomes more complex and it is decided that an “arena” needs to be constructed to contain the K’Nex when they crash. Noah sketches his plans for the construction on the arena.
We worked together to complete the first “arena” however, after the “arena” was created the boys decided to add cars and contraptions into the “arena” and then began creating their own interpretation of what the “arena” should have in it.
THE LAST DAY
Adjustments were made to the prototype and the final “arena” was constructed. The children have expanded on the “arena’ design and are now using it for their cars and jumps they have built in the mean time.
