February 2012

Schoolage Group

We have been very busy this past month learning a new skill - sewing.  We started last month and some of the children sewed felt mittens (by hand). This month, we brought in a sewing machine - and the children were able to use it to sew small aprons for the Nursery School Group.  They traced their patterns, cut them out - and along with Dee's help, stitched them up.  They all did a great job.  We also had a very fun, successful "Valentine Tea" on February 14th.  Parents joined us for a special treat, some coffee or tea, a Valentine Word Find and Heart Bingo.

Kindergarten Group

During the Month of January the Kindergarten children have been very engaged in their learning environment. Some of the ideas that the children have been exploring include travel (places they have been and how they got there) and mixing colors. Just recently a conversation about the universe took place during our morning snack and has sparked an interest in outer space. This topic is just in its developing stages; at this time the children are sharing with us what their base knowledge is on space. Through various discussions during the day and by information shared with homework sheets the children and educators will be able to decide on what area to focus on first.

School Age Group

Coming back from the break the children went right into discussing all the fun adventures they have had over the holidays. We had a few children that went to some wonderful, warm places and others that visited their families out of town. The plastercine world was brought out by the children again and became a very strong interest. It expanded to children making their own separate cities on ceramic tiles instead of just expanding on Shaynah and Ethan’s big city. People, buildings, amusement parks, boats and bugs are being built in the cities. The children have also shown an interest in beading. This is a great way for the children to challenge using their hand-eye coordination and their fine motor skills by using smaller beads and different wires to create jewelry with. We are looking forward to what the New Year will bring!

INFANT PROGRAM

We just can't believe how fast time is flying in the infant program. Over the past month we have been exploring "movement" with your children! Some activities they have enjoyed participating in have been painting with their bodies to music, painting with cars, jumping on a trampoline and driving cars along ramps. Over the past few weeks we have been very excited to hear some new language coming from Sydney and Finley! Sydney's favorite new words are 'no" and "bye bye" while Finley is working on his "ssss" sound trying very hard to say the word "stuck" Wylder continues to amaze us each day with new words along with their signs! Over the next few weeks we will be welcoming 3 new children to our infant program; Brayden, Nicholas and Tyra. We are looking forward to getting to know them and to see where the children's interest will head with a full group of six!!!

Toddler Program

The interest and exploration of concepts continues. Most recently, the children have been exploring "big and little". Naturally, a discussion about Mount McKay began as the children point it out when we are outside in the playground. As a result, the children brought this concept and awareness of community into our indoor environment. We have a photo displayed of Mount McKay from the view of our playground. The children created a group painting of Mount McKay which is proudly displayed in our room and have also created a three dimensional sculpture of the mountain using salty map dough and rocks!

Preschool/Kindergarten Program

The children were very busy planning for the celebration of the catapult project. They worked hard creating invitations for their parents, baking cookies and talking about how they will all take turns to shoot the catapult so all their parents could watch! We had a large bristle board that displayed how the interest started, the research that took place, the collaboration from the children, parents and community, and a display of the representations and the process on how they created it!!! This celebration was a wonderful turn out and we thank all the parents that came out to be apart of this very special moment!

After School Program

Art and Sewing Club has been going very well as the children seem to enjoy signing up for the workshops posted. In January we have done the India Ink with feather then we used clay, beads and wore to make 3d creations and tomorrow we will de decoupage on glass jars. These will be nice to display on our light table for transparence or on the tables for centerpieces.
