Our mornings have been quite exciting over the last few weeks in the School Age Program. Intricate structures have been constructed using large and small blocks every day. Observations were made of the children as they talked of cities, jails, and castles. We changed our environment around to support the children with their construction, and placed the block area in a bigger space and provided some loose parts such as tires and cardboard planks. The children started bringing in cars from home to use as "guys" in their play.
Their structure has been left up for the children to return to daily. This has given the children ownership of the space, and aided in responsibility and respect within our program among all of the children.
"It's a car castle"
"You're on look out duty"
"These are bad guys and they can't get out"
Take a look at how much detail and effort has been put into this structure. Do you see all of the ramps and tunnels that they have built?
